The terroir of Humboldt County

It’s no surprise that this county is known worldwide for cannabis. For decades much of the cannabis that came from this region needed no name other than “Humboldt.” In the same way that sparkling wine grown in Champagne is simply called Champagne, so is Humboldt synonymous with the finest cannabis.

Humboldt expresses the intensity of its terroir

A cannabis-growing region

Gifted by nature

Community, sustainability, and a resilient mindset run as deep as the rivers in Humboldt County. They are the offspring of an independent culture that grew from tribes living in tune with nature, crusty gold prospectors, tough lumberjacks, self-reliant ranchers, weathered fishermen and free-thinking hippies who call this region their home.

Remarkable geology

A diversity of soils

Blessed by a moderate climate and intense rainfall, Humboldt’s environment is uniquely suited to growing cannabis.  Unlike traditional agricultural areas impacted by heavy metals in the soil, Humboldt’s generations of farmers maintain a culture of respect for nature in this privileged geological and climatic region.

Terroir priorities

Fighting for environmental and social justice

Terroir preservation

The energy of the place impacts the energy of the plant

Cannabis farmers know that to fully understand the terroir demands a genuine partnership with nature. Stimulating soil vitality or restoring genetics: in Humboldt, organic farming and regenerative farming are all common practices.

Appellations

Insisting on terroir-based cannabis appellations

Just as grapes express the soil they grow in, so cannabis quality is directly linked to soil microbiome. Decades of knowledge about the plant’s relationship with its environment gives Humboldt cannabis its extraordinary identity.

Regulatory framework

A properly functioning program

California is developing its cannabis appellations program. We believe in being active with local, state and national trade organizations to ensure high priority for cannabis origin protections.

Terpenes and terroir

Expressing a place

We can’t resist agricultural products that express a sense of place: cannabis pairs well with the cornucopia of locally grown organic food and wine produced in Humboldt. Come sample our local abundance.

Terroir: Taste of Place

Cannabis Terroir is about Transmission

Is terroir soil or is it a human construct? Terroir is the interaction between place, plant and people over time. It is a transmission. If one is missing, it is not terroir.

3 Steps towards Sustainability and Social Justice in Cannabis

This year’s combination of climate crisis, COVID-19 and BLM protests around the world makes one thing very clear: environmental sustainability and social justice are linked. “ The legacy cannabis growers of the Emerald triangle went back to the land decades ago to live an alternative way of life that cared for nature and for each other. From the start, it was about humans and community as much as it was about ecology. Their experience reveals three steps to take, or aspire towards, to commit to sustainable development.
